When I consult families as director of TSCHAA, I often hear things like:
“I just want to make sure I am doing right.”
“What is the right way to homeschool?”
“This curriculum isn’t working, but everyone else says it is what I should be doing.”
“(Insert professional’s name) says I need to do things differently or I should put my child in public school.”
“But, am I doing it right?”
Everyone is searching for the “right” way to homeschool, and that search is often based on other people’s opinions. When you are unsure of your homeschool, consider the platypus.
The platypus is an animal that illustrates there is no right way to be a mammal. She is a mammal that lays eggs, has a bill like a duck, and has webbed feet. Her unusual features are part of what makes her thrive. She is one of a kind!
Just as the platypus demonstrates, there is no “right” way to be a mammal; there is no “right” way to homeschool. As a homeschool family, you can create an educational journey that is tailored to your unique children. Your homeschool does not have to look like public school, nor does it have to look like anyone else’s homeschool. Your homeschool should be one of a kind.
Focus on your family’s needs and create your own unique homeschool journey that helps your kiddos thrive. Draw inspiration from the platypus to remind yourself that there is no “right” way to educate your kiddos. If your homeschool does not look like anyone else’s homeschool (or public/private school) and your child is learning, then you are probably doing it right!
